Why has Skyword chosen to implement a fee on contributor income earned through its platform?
Like many organizations, Skyword is experiencing increased costs associated with doing business, which includes all aspects of contributor engagement, support, and payment handling. After careful analysis, we’ve determined our business can no longer absorb or pass on the full extent of those expenses to our brand clients. Implementing a 10% fee on income earned through the Skyword platform will help ensure that we can maintain the same level of service to our freelance community, including use of our technology, exposure to brands, in-house support, and premium rates and payment handling.
How did Skyword decide on the 10% fee?
We made this decision after extensive analysis of operational costs, competitive fee structures, and direct input from analysts and members of the freelance community.
In comparing similar organizations’ pricing structures, we found that fees to contributors were significantly higher (20-30%). We want to ensure that Skyword remains a premier partner for freelance contributors, so we decided to implement a fee that is lower than those other organizations while helping to reduce Skyword’s overall costs.
When will the 10% fee go into effect?
The contributor fee will apply to income earned from assignments opened on or following October 16, 2025.
Does the fee apply to assignments issued before October 16, 2025?
No. Income from assignments issued before October 16, 2025, will not incur a fee, even if payment is processed after that date.
Does this change impact payment timing and cadence?
No. There will be no disruption to payment timing and cadence as a result of this change.
Can I increase my rate to offset the 10% fee?
As always, you have the ability to accept or decline assignments offered to you at fixed rates, and to bid on assignments with rates you set or negotiate. We advise all contributors to put forward their most competitive rates based on the work being assigned, while taking all terms and conditions into consideration.
How will the fee be visible in the platform?
Notice of the 10% fee will be included in the platform Terms and Conditions all freelance contributors are required to read and accept as part of the account creation process. Freelancers recruited to Skyword programs through our custom talent acquisition services will also be made aware of the fee ahead of account creation, as part of the recruitment and onboarding process.
